Ruijin Drive Back - Interesting Sight - March 25

For our trip back, our guide thought it would be fun to have a picnic. We agreed so she went to grocery before we left Ruijin and picked up some things.

After several hours of driving we pulled off the road along a lake. She had picked some great things. Chinese grocerys are full of wonderful prepared foods and snacks.

The girls were playing by the lake when we saw a guy pull up on a motorcycle carrying a set of 2 wheels. He went down to the waters edge. We were wondering what someone would do with 2 wheels.

Off in the other direction we saw a flat boat coming in with single fisherman and what appeared to be 2 birds on it. As it came closer, we realized that it was birds on it. He went over to meet the guy with the wheels. It was definately 2 large birds on it. Our guide explained that she had heard of this but never actually seen it.

I have since done a search on google and learned it is called a Cormorant bird and has been used as way to fish for centuries in China but also find mention of it in New York in 1886 and England. The birds are trained to catch the fish. Something is put around their neck to keep from swallowing the fish. They catch it and bring it back to the boat.

Pretty spot for a picnic.

Lauren with jacket she got from foster family.

Amazing that the birds just stay on the boat.

Now we know what the wheels were for.

As we watched this we thought we were seeing something that has been going on for centuries but now with a twist. They hook it up to the motor bike and off it goes down the highway to market with the birds hanging on.
